Vinod Mehra. He worked in many films as a child actor. Then became the lead actor in the 70s. He had a great professional life, but had a lot of ups and downs in his personal life. The actress he liked was rejected by his mother. Then the family members got married of their choice, then they had a heart attack. Vinod Mehra was born on 13 February 1945 in Amritsar, Punjab. His father’s name was Parameshwaridas Mehra and mother’s name was Kamla Mehra. After independence, his family shifted from Amritsar to Bombay (now Mumbai). Vinod Mehra’s elder sister Sharda had acted in many films. After this Vinod went to the industry. He completed his graduation in Mumbai itself.
Said goodbye to the world at the age of 45
Vinod started his career as a child actor. He had played many roles in the 50s, but in 1971 he made his debut as a lead actor. He made the film ‘Gurudev’, which was released 3 years after his death. Vinod Mehra had said goodbye to the world on 30 October 1990 at the age of just 45. He had lost his life due to heart attack.
Started career as a child actor
Vinod Mehra played the young character of Kishore Kumar in the movie ‘Ragini’ in 1958. After working as a child artist in several films, he made his acting debut in 1971 with ‘Ek Thi Rita’. He was one of the finalists among 10,000 contestants in the All India Talent Competition organized by United Producers and Filmfare in 1965. However, he lost the competition to Rajesh Khanna and became the runner up. Earlier he worked in Goldfield Mercantile Company. He was spotted by Roop K Shorey at the Gaylord restaurant in Bombay (now Mumbai), following which he entered the film industry.
Worked in more than 100 films
This was followed by Vinod Mehra’s ‘Parde Ke Peeche’, which made Yogita Bali’s debut. Then he appeared with Rekha in films like ‘Ailaan’, ‘Amar Prem’, ‘Lal Patthar’, ‘Anurag’. He worked in more than 100 movies in his career. He acted as the lead actor in these films, but after that he appeared as a secondary lead in most of the multi-starrer films. Sometimes he becomes a friend, sometimes a father or a police officer. He worked with top actors from Sunil Dutt to Sanjeev Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. Most of his movies featured Rekha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Yogita Bali, Shabana Azmi and Bindiya Goswami. Many of his films including ‘Naagin’, ‘Jaani Dushman’, ‘Ghar’ were highly appreciated.
Actor turned Director and Producer
In the 80s, he turned actor to director and producer. Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor were in lead roles in his ‘Gurudev’. During the shooting of this film, Vinod suffered a heart attack and died. This film was released in 1993, which was completed by Raj Sippy. Several of his films were released after his death, including ‘Patthar Ke Phool’, ‘Insaniyat’ and ‘Aurat Aurat Aurat’.
Had secretly married Rekha!
It is said that Vinod Mehra was very close to Rekha in the 70s. It was also said that they had got married, but in the year 2004, Rekha denied the news of marriage on Simi Grewal’s show. Rekha’s biography The Untold Story by Yasser Usman mentions that Rekha and Vinod married in Kolkata. Then he took Rekha to his house in Mumbai, but when Rekha started touching her mother-in-law’s feet, she pushed the actress away. After this Vinod asked Rekha to leave the house.
First marriage, extra marital affair and cheating!
Vinod Mehra’s first marriage to Meena Brokaw was arranged by his mother. After this Vinod had a heart attack, for which Meena had to listen to a lot of taunts. After recovering, his name started being associated with Bindiya Goswami. After this Meena was left with no option and she left him and later they got divorced. But Vinod was shocked when Bindiya left him and married director JP Dutta. After this Vinod married Kiran, the daughter of a Kenyan businessman. He had two children from this marriage, but son Rohan died before he was born. His daughter Sonia Mehra acted in several films and son Rohan Mehra made his Bollywood debut in the year 2018 with Nikkhil Advani’s ‘Bazaar’.
