Vikrant Massey Sabarmati Report delves into the sensitive and controversial subject of the Godhra incident. Interestingly, this release follows another recent film, Accident or Conspiracy: Godhra, which came out in July. Starring Ranvir Shorey and Manoj Joshi, that film focused on the same tragic event. The protagonist’s life spirals after he loses his job. Struggling with alcoholism, he steals from his housekeeper’s purse and takes on odd dubbing assignments to survive. When the young journalist offers him a chance to return to Godhra for money, he reluctantly agrees. The movie repeatedly emphasizes the challenges Hindi journalists face in gaining societal respect, setting the stage for a climax where this fallen journalist disproves an English channel’s narrative on a Hindi platform.
A Focus on the Godhra Tragedy
The film draws parallels with Accident or Conspiracy: Godhra, using references to the Nanavati Commission report and court rulings to remind viewers of the horrific event where 59 Ram Bhakts returning from Ayodhya were burned alive in a train at Godhra. While the film attempts to list their names, this effort stops abruptly after a few names.
The Director’s Journey
Directed by Rajan Chandel, a former assistant to Anurag Kashyap, Sabarmati Report faced hurdles with the censor board. Ekta Kapoor stepped in, reshooting much of the film and bringing in Dheeraj Sarna, known for his work in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and as the writer of Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, as the director. Riddhi Dogra, as the assertive English journalist, and Raashi Khanna, as the truth-seeking reporter, deliver solid performances, while Nazneen Patni leaves an impact despite her brief role.
Where the Film Stumbles
While Sabarmati Report tries to highlight the dignity of Hindi journalism, it ironically stumbles on its own narrative. The production design has noticeable flaws, such as Marathi signage at Godhra station and unnatural depictions of burned train compartments. Even the written Hindi on screen is often incorrect, a glaring issue for a film championing Hindi journalism.
Final Thoughts
Sabarmati Report has its heart in the right place, aiming to retell a pivotal chapter of India’s history. But with its uneven execution and the shadow of a similar film released just months earlier, it struggles to make a lasting impact.
