When Disney Plus Hotstar’s new web series ‘Pop Kaun’ begins, the first three names to appear on the screen in the opening credits are Gaurav Banerjee, Varun Malik and Mahesh Menon. All three are executive producers of the series. To understand in simple language, these three have finalized the story, screenplay and cast from the idea of this series. Why am I writing the name of these three first in the review, I will tell in a short while, first understand who is Farhad Samji who made this series? There used to be a pair of writers named Sajid Farhad in Hindi cinema. The two later also directed two films named ‘Housefull 3’ and ‘Entertainment’, which were claimed to be comedy films. Juggling numbers, the films were declared hits and the result was that the vehicle of a little wiser Farhad left here as a solo engine. The new station is the web series ‘Pop Kaun’. Visually, it looks like an unsold film which has been released by Disney’s Indian officials after making a series.
Biggest discount in the name of Disney
The web series ‘Pop Kaun’ is such a poor series at the level of writing, director and imagination that ‘miracles’ like Farhad Samji’s ‘Bachchan Pandey’, ‘Laxmi’ and ‘Coolie Number One’ also look good in front of it. This series by Farhad Samji is for Salman Khan who is directing his upcoming film ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’. How the film has been made, is told daily in the business circles of the Mumbai film industry by those who watch the edit. Zee Studios has probably been blessed with ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ and the three names of the OTT world who have been blessed with ‘Pop Kaun’, whose names I wrote first in the review. The ‘culprits’ of serving this series in front of the audience are Gaurav Banerjee, Varun Malik and Mahesh Menon. If consumers who pay money to watch such a series, which cheats on the name of Disney, will file a case in the court, then their name will come first.
Bad writing, Bad Direction
If some of the best thing about the web series ‘Pop Kaun’, then they were its teasers which were hung in front of the audience to hook the audience before the release of the series. Seeing the teaser, there was hope that perhaps Farhad Samji would do something great on digital. But, the very first episode of the web series ‘Pop Kaun’ is such that the viewers start getting upset with themselves. From the scene of Kunal Khemu’s entry till the end of the first episode, there is not a single scene which makes us laugh. It is also understandable what Farhad Samji did in the script which was written by copying and pasting the jokes coming on WhatsApp. As soon as the falling in love line starts, the extremely vulgar and obscene line that comes before it, is the real hallmark of Farhad Samji’s writing art. Johnny Lever’s character understands everything after 10 seconds, and does not laugh at such an incident even once. Yes, one definitely feels that why did you sit down to watch this series?
Kunal Khemu’s rapidly shrinking innings
Kunal Khemu has always been such a rage in Hindi cinema that his close friends used to wait for weeks to meet him and here he keeps appearing on OTT week after week, the matter is still not happening. Forgive Satish Kaushik’s soul as he would never like to be remembered for such a series. The over acting of Rajpal Yadav, Zakir Hussain and Saurabh Shukla is still understandable that these days they are ready to do any kind of character by taking money. But, Nupur Sanon?
Very bad debut of Nupur Sanon
In her debut film or series, whatever you call ‘Pop Kaun’, Nupur Sanon has played a very silly character. She is seen on screen for the first time, from where Farhad Samji has colored her character in such a way that after 13 days the date of April 1 starts being remembered again and again. Farhad himself is also working in the series. And, it’s very bad to see them repeatedly bulging their eyes and looking at the camera. Poor job in this series from writing, direction, acting, editing and music to all other departments. At the beginning of the series, 2023 is seen floating on the water. Farhad Samji understood this or not, but at least Disney Plus Hotstar people should have seen that there in Hollywood, Bob Iger is working day and night to make the company’s content spectacular and here with series like ‘Pop Who’ these people are bent on mixing the name of Disney in the soil.
