“Gutar Gu” is a six-part series that revolves around a simple yet delightful love story of Ritu and Anuj, set in the town of Bhopal. The show is a breath of fresh air in the current era where teenage romance is often portrayed with darker themes and conflicts. The creators, Saqib Pandor, Guneet Monga, and Achin Jain, have crafted a beautiful story that is innocent, sweet, and relatable.
The show is set in a rapidly urbanizing town, where malls and cafes are springing up, but still small enough to allow rumors to spread quickly. Despite the modern setting, the show exudes an old-world charm, as if it belongs to a distant past, before technology and the harsh realities of life took over. The use of cell phones, laptops, and social media throughout the series is a reminder of the present times, but the story is so captivating that one can easily get lost in the sweet simplicity of the characters’ lives.
Ritu and Anuj attend different schools, and their chance meeting at a coaching class leads to a heartwarming romance that is both endearing and relatable. Anuj strikes up a casual conversation with Ritu, who has recently moved from Gurugram, and he falls in love right away. Before the hero and heroine have even considered step two, his giggly boy friends turn one casual conversation into a wonderful romance.. Bhopal is a small town where a boy and a girl seen together can generate gossip, and the boys of the Hindi medium Bhojnagri School do not even dream of talking to the girls of the posh co-ed Paul Williams. The show captures the essence of small-town life and the joys and struggles of first love in a beautiful and heartwarming way.
The city of Gurugram has a reputation for street harassment of girls, making Ritu’s move to Bhopal a refreshing change of pace. Anuj, a shy and respectful boy, catches Ritu’s eye and charms her with his innocent and sincere demeanor. Despite his goofy grin and lingering baby fat, Anuj is a boy who cannot lie and is incapable of being dishonest. After their first date goes awry, Anuj is honest about his no-show, revealing that he was sent to get extra holes punched on his belt by his father.
As their friendship grows into a deeper connection, Ritu and Anuj encounter various obstacles that threaten to keep them apart. A jock-like admirer of Ritu challenges Anuj to a duel, while Ritu’s Gurugram friends look down on him. The threat of Hindutva groups also looms, casting a shadow over their Valentine’s date.
Despite these challenges, the couple’s love for each other continues to flourish. Their journey is filled with gentle, funny, and believable moments, including Anuj seeking advice from the older and world-weary Amit Bhaiya, and Anuj’s younger brother proving to be smarter and more devious than him.
However, their relationship is put to the ultimate test when Anuj’s secret is discovered by his mother, adding an unexpected twist to the story. The show captures the essence of first love, with its innocent charm and relatable struggles, making it a must-watch for anyone who wants to experience the magic of young love again.
Ritu, the female lead in the teen romance series “Gutar Gu,” is a character worth noting because of her academic excellence and career-driven attitude. Despite being prematurely labeled as “bhabhi” by her male peers, she is not a bimbette. The show is set in Bhopal, a rapidly urbanizing town with malls and cafes. The iconic Manuabhan Tekri, which offers an incredible view of the town, plays an important role in the plot. Although it is unlikely that the spot would be left vacant for a young couple’s privacy, the top-of-the-world feeling from the Tekri is portrayed beautifully. The show’s stars, Ashlesha Thakur and Vishesh Bansal, have a fresh-faced look that matches their uncorrupted teenage characters. While some modern-day teenagers may find the show too vanilla, older viewers may feel nostalgia for its sweet simplicity. It’s worth noting that “Gutar Gu” is not the first project for Thakur or Bansal. They had previously acted in Pandor’s short film “Gupt Gyaan.”
Anuj, the male lead, is depicted as shy, respectful, and incapable of being dishonest. His goofiness, lingering baby fat, and honesty make him an endearing character. He seeks advice from the older, more experienced Amit Bhaiya, played by Satish Ray, to impress Ritu. However, Anuj’s kid brother is smarter and more cunning than him. The show follows the friendship between Ritu and Anuj, which gradually turns into love through a series of believable yet amusing episodes. For instance, a jock-like admirer of Ritu from her school challenges Anuj to a duel to win her over. Additionally, when Ritu’s Gurugram friends visit, they belittle Anuj, who desperately tries to please them.
The show also explores the tensions between different socioeconomic classes in Bhopal. For instance, the boys of the Hindi medium Bhojnagri School don’t even dream of talking to the girls of the posh co-ed Paul Williams School.
The show is created and directed by Saqib Pandor and produced by Guneet Monga and Achin Jain. It consists of six episodes and is set in the present day, where cell phones, laptops, and social media are omnipresent. The portrayal of teenage romance in “Gutar Gu” is innocent and refreshing, free from the ugliness of crime, violence, and sexed-up teens that often pervades other shows.
Overall, “Gutar Gu” is a refreshing break from the typical OTT content and provides a heartwarming tale of young love that beautifully depicts the joys and challenges of first love in a small town setting which is sure to leave viewers with a smile on their face. Saqib Pandor’s direction, along with Guneet Monga and Achin Jain’s production, has brought to life a charming story that is innocent, sweet, and relatable and provides a delightful escape from the darker themes that are often seen in today’s content. The show is a must-watch for anyone who wants to experience the magic of first love again.
